25 Jan 2012 - Yochanan Afek

The last weekend in Tata Steel tournament is to witness two major open solving competitions taking place in the Duinzaal of hotel Zeeduin, Relweg 59, 1949 EC Wijk aan Zee. Attention! this year not in De Moriaan!

On Saturday January 28th The 3rd Study Solving competition will start at 11.00 and on Sunday the International Solving Championship (ISC) will be held same time and same venue.

This last event is simultaneously run every year on January 29th in different countries with all participants coping with the very same set of problems in 6 genres: twomovers, threemovers, moremovers, studies, helpmates and selfmates. A lighter set of problems is also an option for less experienced solvers. It’s the first time that the Dutch part of this prestigious event takes place in Wijk aan Zee. The participants may also enjoy the last two rounds of the grandmaster tournaments before the prize-giving.

The participants list includes such prominent solvers such as former world champions John Nunn (England) and Piotr Murdzia (Poland); Leading Dutch solver Dolf Wissmann, the current world champion for composing endgame studies Oleg Pervakov and over the board grandmasters Daniel Stellwagen (Netherlands) and Alina L’ami (Rumania) as well as several strong IMs. However both separate events are open to all and also more “amateur” solvers are invited to take part. There are still a few free places in both contests. If you are still willing to give it a try please write promptly to the organizer Yochanan Afek , e-mail: afek26@gmail.com
