Chess grandmasters play football at Telstar

A special football match will take place at second division club Telstar’s stadium in Velsen-Zuid on Wednesday 18 January.

That is when grandmasters from the Tata Steel Masters and the Tata Steel Challengers will walk onto the field, accompanied by Telstar players, to play a friendly football match. The match might be a friendly one, but passions will undoubtedly flare, given the enormous drive that characterizes top players like Carlsen, Karjakin and Loek van Wely. The match starts at 13.30 hours and is open to the public free of admission. The grandmasters will play for an hour and will visit the simultaneous chess for primary schools (also taking place at the Telstar stadium that afternoon) during half time. The Tata Steel Masters will also play at another football stadium during the tournament, but behind the chess board: as part of Tata Steel Chess On Tour they will play the 5th round of the tournament at Feyenoord stadium De Kuip in Rotterdam on Wednesday 19 January.

The 79th edition of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament takes place in Wijk aan Zee from 13 – 29 January 2017.
