Field of participants Tata Steel Chess Tournament 2019 complete
The field of participants of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament 2019 is complete. Today the organisation announced the 14th grandmaster of the Tata Steel Masters and all participants of the Tata Steel Challengers. Richard Rapport (Hungary) will sit down behind the board to battle world champion Magnus Carlsen, former world champions Vladimir Kramnik and Viswanathan Anand and Dutch favourite Anish Giri. Rapport is known for his bold and offensive style of playing. To everyone’s surprise he beat Carlsen two years ago. Brothers Jorden and Lucas van Foreest will both participate, the former making his debut in the Tata Steel Masters and the latter participating in the Tata Steel Challengers for the second time. Other Dutchmen in the Tata Steel Challengers are Erwin l’Ami and Stefan Kuipers.
Sam Shankland was the winner of the ACP Competition with the highest rating below 2750, but had already been invited for the Tata Steel Masters, which is why Richard Rapport was invited. In the ACP Competition with the highest rating below 2650 Maksim Chigaev came out on top and was invited for the Tata Steel Challengers, as one of the ten players making their debut in this group.
The 81st edition of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament will take place from 11 – 27 January 2019. There will also be two Chess On Tour events. The Tata Steel Masters will play the 5th round in Theater de Vest in Alkmaar on Wednesday 16 January and will play the 10th round in the Pieterskerk in Leiden on Wednesday 23 January. All rounds are open to the public free of charge and can also be followed online.
