Round 5 - Nepomnniachtchi and Ding lead going into the first rest day
The 5th round of the Masters group, which was played at the Theater De Vest in Alkmaar, saw only two decisive games, but both were hugely significant.
First of all World Champion Magnus Carlsen put an end to his 21-draw streak (in classical chess) by winning his first ever encounter against Jorden Van Foreest. A bit later Ding Liren beat Sam Shankland (also with the black pieces) to join Nepomniachtchi in the lead on 3.5/5. They are followed by Carlsen, Giri, Anand and Vidit on 3/5.
Back in Wijk aan Zee, all three wins in the Challengers were also scored by grandmasters playing with the black pieces. Korobov beat Kuipers, Kovalev overcame Gledura and in the longest game of the day Bareev converted his pawn up in a rook ending against Saduakassova. Thanks to their victories, Korobov and Kovalev now lead the tournament with 3.5/5.
Tomorrow 17 January is a rest day and action resumes in Wijk aan Zee on Friday 18 January at 1.30pm CET.
