Round 12 - Carlsen enters last round clash against Giri as the sole leader

Magnus Carlsen continued his strong showing in the tournament with a victory over Jan-Krzysztof Duda, leaving him on 8.5/12 and a spectacular 2902 performance.

Giri for his part was unable to obtain any winning chances against Radjabov, and was in fact significantly worse in the final position when his opponent offered him a draw. This means that going into their last round clash, anything other than a win for Giri will give Carlsen a seventh tournament victory in Wijk aan Zee. Elsewhere, Sam Shankland bounced back from yesterday’s mishap to inflict a crushing defeat on Nepomniachtchi while Kramnik managed a second consecutive victory against his compatriot Fedoseev.

In the Challengers Kovalev has for the first time taken the sole lead after scoring a third consecutive win, this one against Elisabeth Paehtz, and storming to an impressive 9/12. Chigaev was held to a draw by Lucas Van Foreest while Esipenko beat Saduakassova, so the two Russian grandmasters are only trailing Kovalev by half a point.

Tomorrow’s 13th and final round starts an hour and a half earlier than usual, at noon local time.
