The Municipality of Alkmaar is a Chess Table Richer

In January 2019, Alkmaar was Host City of Chess on Tour during the Tata Steel Chess Tournament 2019. Last week, Grandmaster Lucas Van Foreest opened a chess table on the schoolyard of Primary School ‘Kardinaal de Jong’ together with Councilor Dijkman by playing a game of quick chess. A great new place in Alkmaar to learn chess, to play against each other and to meet new people.

Grandmaster Lucas van Foreest, who has roots in Alkmaar (his ancestors were governors of the city) and in chess (his great-grandfather and his brother were Dutch Chess Champions), had come to Alkmaar especially for this occasion. Under loud encouragement from school children and under the watchful eye of the tournament director of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament with a delegation from Tata Steel and the directors of Alkmaar, Grandmaster Van Foreest made a number of moves on the new chess table.

Sports councilor Pieter Dijkman is happy with the acquisition:

“At the beginning of this year, Alkmaar was the host city of Chess on Tour during the Tata Steel Chess Tournament 2019. Alkmaar would like to make chess live in the city by giving the sport of thought a visible place in the outdoor space. Playing chess is an age-old tradition as a game. The game incites people to a challenge, creates encounters and can be played by and with everyone. For a number of years there has been a chess field on the Paardenmarkt and now there is also this beautiful chess table in Kooimeer on the schoolyard of Primary School Kaardinal de Jong.”

It was a lively meeting this afternoon on the schoolyard of Kaardinal de Jong, with many residents from Kooimeer present. Not only to (learn to) play chess, but also to get to know each other. Chess connects!
